History: The Chihuahua takes its name from the Mexican state abutting west Texas and New Mexico, but likely came from the ancient Techichi dogs of the Toltecs crossed with hairless dogs from the Orient. The Techichi was larger than the modern Chihuahua and was mute.

The breed was discovered in Chihuahua State in the 1850s and quickly became popular. It was first registered with the American Kennel Club in 1904.

Size: Generally, the height ranges between 6 and 10 inches at the withers. However, some dogs grow as tall as 12 to 15 inches.

Weight: Both British and American breed standards state that a Chihuahua must not weigh more than 6.0 pounds.

Coat: Smooth And Long Haired, In the smooth coat variety, the texture is smooth, glossy, and coarser than the hair of a long coat. Some Chihuahuas have heavier coats than others, and will have an “undercoat.”

On the other hand, a long haired Chihuahua’s coat texture is soft and can be flat or have soft curls. The ears have a cute fringe and the tail has full hair. The Chihuahua’s feet and legs have slight feathering, the hind legs have “pants,” and the neck should have a larger ruff.

Life Span: approximately 10 to 17 years of age.

Temperament: Chihuahuas appear to be more curious than other dog breeds. They always seem to be investigating what is going on around them. Chihuahuas can appear to be very ferocious. This is in part to their persistence at warding off danger until it is gone.Chihuahuas are very loyal and will to protect you. Overall Chihuahuas are very loving and sweet dogs. But it is understandable why most people think Chihuahuas have a bad temperament. If you were in their shoes and much smaller you would understand why they have to stand up for themselves.

The great side of Chihuahuas comes out when they are home with their owners in a familiar territory so they can relax and beloved.

Common Ailments: The Chihuahua is susceptible to patella luxation and eye problems.

Exercise Required: The Chihuahua is an excellent apartment or condominium dweller. The majority of their exercise needs can be met indoors with toys or play sessions. However, they greatly enjoy going with their owners and benefit from daily walks. Using a harness is recommended instead of a leash is best given their delicate neck and bone structure.
